BioShock is a first-person shooter video game developed by Irrational Games, then under the name 2K Boston/2K Australia, and designed by Ken Levine. BioShock is the "genetically enhanced" first-person shooter that lets you do things never before possible in the genre. Turn everything into a weapon, biologically mod your body with plasmids, hack devices and systems, upgrade your weapons and craft new ammo variants, and experiment with different battle techniques.

Going beyond run-and-gun corridors BioShock presents a unique and unpredictable first-person shooter experience in real time. In order to survive an onslaught of assailants, you must take control of your world by hacking mechanical devices, capturing security towers and crafting items to protect yourself. Upgrade your weapons and genetically modify your body to evade the grotesque ghouls who are after you. Make meaningful choices and mature decisions to ultimately answer the question: Should you exploit the innocent survivors of Rapture or save them?

The demo for BioShock. Don't forget to download the latest drivers available for your video. BioShock opens with a bang, but the overall plot focuses more on making an emotional impact than an explosive one. The year is 1960, and you're flying over the Atlantic Ocean. One mysterious plane crash later, you're floating in the water, apparently the lone survivor, surrounded by the flaming wreckage of the aircraft. But there's a lighthouse on a tiny island just at the edge of your view. Who in their right mind would put a lighthouse this far out? You swim closer and discover a small submersible called a bathysphere waiting to take you underwater. After catching a breathtaking view of what's below, you're sent into the secret underwater city of Rapture. Masterminded by a somewhat megalomaniacal businessman named Andrew Ryan, this city is driven by its own idea of total freedom, with capitalism completely unhindered by governmental meddling and science unhinged from the pesky morals of organized religion. Sounds like the perfect society, right? Well, even before you step out of your bathysphere and into the city, it becomes obvious that everything has gone horribly wrong down here. The city is trashed, and genetic freaks called splicers roam around, attacking anything that gets in front of them. At the heart of the matter is a powerful, corrupting substance called ADAM, which makes all this genetic tinkering possible and allows you to get your first plasmid power, the ability to shoot lightning out of your fingertips.

Aside from having different technical problems, the differences between the Xbox 360 and PC versions of BioShock are fairly minor. The mouse and keyboard support works exactly as you'd expect, and using a mouse makes the combat a touch easier, since aiming for the head is usually easier with a mouse than with a gamepad. But if you're after that console-style gamepad experience, BioShock has full support for the wired Xbox 360 controller. If you're at a loss for which version to purchase, it comes down to the quality of your PC. If you're running a high-end DirectX 10 machine, the game looks better on the PC. It also has DirectX 9 support, and even running this way, it's possible for some facets of BioShock, like texture quality, to look sharper than the 360 version if your machine can handle it. But when you factor in the current bug list for each version, or if your PC isn't especially recent, the Xbox 360 version is a safer bet.

Considered to be one the finest games in the history of interactive entertainment, BioShock is a watershed entry into the world of video games. In addition to some nice period music that plays from jukeboxes or record players, you'll get some terrific music that helps set the creepy, uncertain mood. The weapons sound good and loud, and everything else just sounds right. The voice acting, which you'll hear plenty of throughout the game from both living characters and their posthumous audio recordings, really brings the story together and helps give it all an emotional impact that most games lack. You'll also hear splicers mumbling, humming, and singing to themselves as they scavenge the environment, which helps give the game a creepy vibe. The quality and depth of things like this are what set BioShock apart from other games and make it something really special overall.

Wow this is a great trophy list since I just beat the 360 version of Bioshock recently. If you're the kind of player who just wants yet another action-packed shooter, BioShock probably isn't for you. Its weak link is its unsatisfying no-skill-required combat, which might aim this one just over the head of the average Halo fan. But if you want to get a little fancy, there's a lot of fun to be had with some of the game's more indirect fighting methods. It builds an amazing atmosphere by using terrific graphics and sound to set a creepy mood. But BioShock's real strengths are as a compelling work of interactive fiction, and as a unique ride through a warped world with some great payoff built into its mysterious plot. If that description has you even the least bit interested, you'll definitely find BioShock worth playing--but you still might want to hold off for a patch or two, just in case. BioShock 2 doesn't release until next year, but NECA has already begun celebrating the success. BioShock is a shooter unlike any you\'ve ever played, loaded with weapons and tactics never seen.

If(when) they decide to make a Bioshock movie, they should hire you on for props. Congrats again and when can we expect a Big Sister costume?

Top Hot Xbox 360 Games-Mass Effect Review

Mass Effect Review

Mass Effect's greatest strength is the quality of the narrative. Mass Effect is the most significant leap forward for the role-playing genre in the past generation of games. It moves the genre towards exciting combat and away from menus and bogged down die-rolling. It takes the conversations and makes them feel cinematic and immersive through innovative new interactions and camera cuts. It forces the player to make difficult decisions that they'll feel the full weight of in Mass Effect 2 once it reads your save and sets your actions in stone. With a larger-than-life story, exotic aliens, amazing technology and no shortage of high adventure and thrilling firefights, Bioware's “Mass Effect 2” is a game that everybody should play, and I don't want to hear your whiny excuses about waiting for an elevator ride to finish its 30 second ride. Just play it. You can thank us later.

Mass Effect 2 drags role-playing games kicking and screaming into the future. The game begins with the creation of your Commander Shepard. You're free to go with the model that has been used in all of the marketing, or you can make your own; male or female and with a variety of background and visual options. The decisions you make here have a substantial bearing on the game itself. Some people you meet in the game will deliver different dialogue if you're playing as a woman. Which background options you choose for your character will also shape the way people talk to you throughout the course of the game. The most important decision you'll make will be which character class to start with.

It's certainly true of the first planetary landing you make in Mass Effect. There may be greener, denser, more populated spheres, the combat takes a few hours to wrap your head around. Until you do, you'll want to save your progress after every battle. There's an autosave system in Mass Effect, but it isn't very effective. Nor are the almost non-existent tutorials. You'll probably find yourself dying quite often before you get into the swing of using cover effectively and making proper use of your powers.

I have played, but not completed, the original Mass Effect. Perhaps the most disappointing part of Mass Effect is the method used for doling out commands to your party members. If you want, you can have full control over when and how your allies use their powers. As far as motion goes, however, you only ever have direct control of how Commander Shepard moves while your two party members act on their own, with questionable AI. You can give directives to the two, such as to find cover or to move to a specific point, but not individually. Both squad members act on one command. It's so rudimentary that it makes the entire concept feel rather pointless.

I'm 20 hours in to Mass Effect 2. And as I board a flight to check out the Apple tablet, I couldn't care less about Cupertino, Mass Effect is one of videogames greatest treasures. It's an adventure that is so captivating that you'll be counting the days. Playing Mass Effect is like driving a Lamborghini, but with your mother's Buick V6 installed under the hood.

Second entry in BioWare's sci-fi saga has a narrative so complex, the game will prove unique to every player. BioWare's latest RPG epic is finally upon us, but has Mass Effect been worth the wait? Short answer: Yes. Long answer: Yeeeesssss.

Quick, name the fastest-growing video game platform. Wii? PlayStation? DS?

Try the iPhone.

Like everyone else with software to sell, top-tier game developers are flocking to the iPhone, and gamers are reaping big rewards. Blockbuster titles like The Sims 3 or Grand Theft Auto, which might cost $30 or $40 on other gaming platforms, are selling for $7 and $10, respectively, on iTunes.

And the iPhone’s processing power makes it a formidable challenger to hand-helds like Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. And then some.

“The iPhone 3GS actually blows both of them out of the water,” said Dave Castelnuovo, founder of Bolt Creative, the developer of PocketGod ($1), the top-selling iPhone game.

Things will get even better this year, said executives from Sega, Electronic Arts, GameLoft, Ngmoco and others. Gamers can expect more social-networking elements similar to the Mafia Wars and FarmVille titles on Facebook, as well as the chance to sample many more premium titles free.

What about Android, BlackBerry and Palm devices? It’s a mixed bag. Electronic Arts released a spate of titles for the BlackBerry, but some developers, like Ngmoco, have so far ignored the platform.

Android phones and Palm’s WebOS phones have far fewer games than BlackBerry, partly because they are not yet popular enough to earn the attention of most game developers.

Meanwhile, the latest big-name game to reach the iPhone may not thrill parents who have lost control of their children’s media consumption. Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars made its debut last week on the iTunes store, featuring a main character with a seedy circle of friends, a deep well of expletives and a penchant for homicide.

Even though Chinatown Wars is $20 cheaper on the iPhone than on the DS or the PSP, the game can do more tricks on the iPhone. With a few button pushes, for instance, users can listen to their iTunes library, rather than the game’s music.

Some users will quibble that the iPhone’s touch-screen controls are not as good as the actual buttons on other game platforms. They’re right, but the gaming experience is still quite good.

With Grand Theft Auto, unlike many other premium games, users can move the controls around the screen to suit their preferences. Look for other developers to follow suit.

While we’re making predictions, look this year for an enterprising hardware maker to create a Bluetooth game controller that snaps onto the iPhone. It is an accessory that is begging to be built.

The Grand Theft Auto release also is noteworthy for something it lacks — in-app charges. Developers last year began giving away their games, or charging low up-front fees, then charging for new food, weapons, game levels, skins and the like.

Case in point: If you want to blow through a few hours of Ngmoco’s Eliminate Pro — a slick, futuristic first-person shooter title released in November — without stopping to recharge, you will have to pay for the privilege.

Expect more of that, executives said. Because software advances are making it even easier for game developers to bring new titles to the iPhone, there’s just too much competition for companies that charge high prices on anything other than franchise games like Grand Theft Auto.

Both Eliminate Pro and the highly popular TouchPets, a simulation game for dog aficionados, follow the so-called freemium approach. But they add another dimension, in letting players interact with people globally, via Ngmoco’s Plus+ social network.

Multiplayer, socially connected games on the iPhone and iPod Touch will grow more common, gaming executives said, as more technologists adopt the wisdom that people buy gadgets to connect with other people, not to the devices themselves.

The fullest iteration of the trend can best be shown with a throwback game. I used the iPhone this week to play a Scrabble game hosted on Facebook. I competed against two friends who played on their PCs. The Scrabble iPhone app ($5) sent me messages whenever it was my turn, and it also displayed smack-talk, in real time, from the game’s instant messaging feature.

And yes, my productivity suffered. Immensely.

When fellow iPhone or iPod Touch owners are nearby, most new games will let you challenge them, through Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connections. I dashed through a few rounds of Super Monkey Ball 2 ($5) with my children this way. I used a first-generation iPhone, one child used an iPod and the other used an iPhone 3GS.

They thrashed me, so I switched devices, suspecting that the older iPhone was probably slower or harder to control. They thrashed me again.

Which raises an important point for owners of first-generation iPhones and iPod Touches. Namely, game developers will not completely leave you in the dust. On games with the richest 3-D graphics, like James Cameron’s Avatar ($7), you will wait longer to load the game, but the graphics are just as impressive.

Sometimes the devices will show subtle differences. Need for Speed Shift ($7), a new racing game, was built to capitalize on the iPhone 3GS’s processing speed, so it renders shadows and motion with more precision and elegance than Need for Speed: Undercover ($5), which had its debut last May. But they were both great.

One caveat about these graphically rich games: they are power vampires, sucking your battery dry as they flood your brain with endorphins.

Of course, sometimes a drained battery is a good thing — when you’re too obsessed, for instance. Or just lame.

For instance, while recently playing N.O.V.A. ($7), a first-person shooter that supports multiplayer action over a Wi-Fi or Bluetooth connection, an assassin cornered me and began firing. I pushed every button on the screen, then inexplicably began sprinting toward the bullets.

I somehow made it to the shooter, who sidestepped me and blasted a hole in my cranium. We repeated this dance five times in five minutes, with roughly the same result, when I noticed my battery, which was low when I started, was nearly dead.

Lucky for you, DumbBlond3818. Next time you won’t get off so easy.

Quick Calls

T-Mobile’s new MyTouch 3G Fender Limited Edition ($180 with a two year contract, on T-Mobile.com) boasts a sunburst finish, a music player preloaded with tunes from artists like Eric Clapton and Avril Lavigne, and something earlier MyTouch devices strangely lacked: a built-in 3.5mm headphone jack. A pair of guitar-related apps are included, as is a 16-gigabyte SD card. …Aliph, the maker of the Jawbone Bluetooth headset, has released a new version, the Jawbone Icon ($100 at www.jawbone.com). Sound quality is very good, and the device sheds a few aggravating design flaws from earlier versions…. Want to write music but you can’t play an instrument? Download Voice Band ($3, for iPhones), sing the melodies and rhythms for different instruments, and the app creates the bass, guitar and drum tracks to your specs. Then just add the voice track and send it off to the record company.

Microsoft files motion to dismiss Datel suit, cites Apple and others in defense

Microsoft has registered a motion to dismiss the antitrust lawsuit originally filed by unofficial memory card maker Datel, in which Datel claimed that by locking out its cards, Microsoft was being illegally anti-competitive in the field of 'Multiplayer Online Dedicated Gaming Systems" and their accessories. Microsoft's motion to dismiss (here's the PDF link) actually cites one of its biggest rivals, Apple, who fought off another unofficial vendor by claiming that its users (us) had knowingly agreed that by using its products, any aftermarket products had to come from Apple as well. You can't run OS X on any computers not made by Apple, says Microsoft, and so you can't use any non-Microsoft memory cards on your Xbox.

As with most legal filings, the situation is complicated. Datel is also trying to claim that Microsoft has a grip on the console market by claiming that the much better selling Nintendo Wii isn't actually a part of that market, which leaves Microsoft in the weird position of arguing that yes, there are plenty of consoles (including the PSP and even the PlayStation 2) that "have outsold the Xbox 360." And Microsoft also argues that Datel's cheat-enabling memory cards "undermine quality user experience" on Xbox Live, which would also be reason enough to keep them off the system. Interesting arguments, all, but we'll have to see which emerge victorious after a hearing scheduled for March 2 in San Francisco.
